APR: Determining if It’s for You

As a newly Accredited public relations professional, colleagues and professionals regularly ask me about the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) experience, and if it’s something I would recommend. I typically respond with the same answer — maybe. Below is a simple checklist that may help you determine if the APR is the right fit for you. If you answer “yes” to all or most of these questions, then I would encourage you to get started on your journey.

I typically respond with the same answer — maybe. Below is a simple checklist that may help you determine if the APR is the right fit for you. If you answer “yes” to all or most of these questions, then I would encourage you to get started on your journey.

  • Are you interested in personal professional development, and the ability to deliver even better, more strategic public relations solutions to your employer or clients?
  • Are you interested in career advancement as a result of APR?
  • Are you interested in greater knowledge of public relations and being a champion of the industry?
  • Do you have the ability and time to adequately prepare by attending prep classes, studying the recommended text and meeting with an APR mentor?
  • Do you have the discipline to study?
  • Do you have enough work experience under your belt, as PRSA recommends a minimum of five years of work experience?
  • Are you the type of person who appreciates lifelong learning?
  • Will you commit to APR maintenance throughout your career, as the work doesn’t stop after earning APR?
