Dancing in the Street at the PRSA 2008 International Conference in Detroit

A few weeks ago, my wife and I took my sister from Virginia over to the Motown Museum here in Detroit, and I’m still humming those hits. In fact, as I was listening to “Dancing in the Street” by Martha and the Vandellas the other day, I started to think that the lyrics to that classic Motown hit tie in nicely to the PRSA 2008 International Conference in Detroit.

Callin’ out around the world, are you ready for a brand new beat?

The City of Detroit is excited to welcome PRSA and the International Conference this year. And I think the term “international” is very appropriate here. Did you know it is literally a five-minute drive via bridge or tunnel from Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, Canada? In fact, Detroit is actually north of Canada! The Metro Detroit area also has the largest Middle Eastern population outside of the Middle East itself. Oh, and don’t forget about Greektown and Mexicantown.

The PRSA Detroit Chapter is well qualified to host the International Conference, and we’re planning some great things. Our Chapter was one of the six founding Chapters of PRSA, and is one of the largest Chapters in the country (500+ members) with membership from 11 Fortune 500 companies. Plus, we previously hosted the Conference in 1953, 1972 and 1985.

I could spend a great deal of time talking about the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Motown Museum, the GM Renaissance Center, the Detroit Riverfront or other exciting things about the City, but I’ll save that for the future posts from other members of the Detroit Chapter. So keep checking ComPRhension for more.

This is an invitation, across the nation, a chance for the folks to meet.

Let’s face it, we PR folk are a chatty bunch, and what better place to meet other PR professionals from all over the country than at an International Conference? The Conference theme this year is “Point of Connection,” because we truly believe that an International Conference gives you the chance to connect with PR professionals who may give another perspective to your work in the industry.

To quote Martha and the Vandellas one last time, “It doesn’t matter what you wear (Well, as long as it’s business attire!), just as long as you are there.” We hope you all will join us in the “D” Oct. 25- 28. As for me, “I’ll be there” (ok, last Motown reference).
