The Future Starts Today

This is the exact time of the academic year when it really hits me…the future of the public relations profession truly is in good hands.

No, it’s not “exam fatigue”…exams at Curry College don’t start until next week. Nor have I (as many students in my early-ish morning classes suspect is all-too-often the case) over-caffeinated.

What it is, actually, is the result of the high that I’m on because today I’m presenting the Communication Department’s “Public Relations” award, as I do every year, to a PR Concentration student who, in my own less-than-humble opinion, absolutely personifies the concept of “public relations professional” with an emphasis on “professional.”

Public Relations: Communicating from the Heart

Posted by Kirk Hazlett in February 19th 2013

It seems appropriate at this time of year to at least acknowledge that those of us who have worked or are working in public relations are blessed with that wond’rous organ known affectionately as the “heart.”

Last time I checked, we all had one, both literally and figuratively, although the latter can be difficult to detect sometimes according to our friends in the media and elsewhere.

Heart, though, is a key element in any successful public relations effort. Without it, messages have a tendency to go unheeded, attitudes to remain unchanged, and programs to fail.

#PRin2013: A Look Back at the Predictions

Posted by PRSA Staff  in February 5th 2013

As we wrap up this year’s #PRin2013 series, here is a recap of what our 12 contributors predicted for the public relations industry in 2013.

Kirk Hazlett, APR, Fellow PRSA, kicked off this year’s #PRin2013 series with a prediction that 2013 would be about accountability. The public relations professional must go beyond merely reaching stakeholder audiences. They must ensure that the message is genuine and any promises made to the public are genuine.

Elise Mitchell, APR, Fellow PRSA, offered up six trends she sees on the horizon this year.

The “Year That Was”…PR’s Challenges and Opportunities

Posted by Kirk Hazlett in December 18th 2012

Simply put, this past year has been one humdinger from the public relations point of view.

  • The continuing fallout from the BP disaster remains a news media staple and reminds us not only of the importance of communicating with our stakeholders but also of actually demonstrating that we care about their welfare.
  • The varying political catastrophes in the Mideast and elsewhere remind us that, no matter how much “polish” we put on the frog’s public persona, it’s still a frog with all its warts and icky-feeling skin.

Assessing the Net of Disclosure: Should the SEC “Like” Facebook?

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is in the news again, not for enraging subscribers over a price increase or for presiding over a steep decline in share price, but for using social media to tout a company milestone.

Hastings took to his Facebook page in June and praised his staff for achieving a monthly viewing rate in excess of 1 billion hours for the first time in the company’s history.
