Rutgers PR crisis stems from months of woeful inaction

Editor’s note: A version of this post was originally published as an op-ed in PRDaily.

Rutgers University in New Jersey announced today that it has fired its Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Rice.

There’s no doubt that terminating Rice’s employment was the only remaining course of action for the university to follow. Still, it’s akin to applying a public relations Band Aid: a temporary fix that takes place after the damage is already done. And what damage it is.

There’s an app for that

There are mobile business apps designed to make users more productive, more organized and more collaborative, but now there is an app to help guide public relations professionals in making ethical decisions. Ethical decision-making has never been easier thanks to PRSA taking the Code of Ethics (Code) mobile.

PRSA, in partnership with MSLGROUP, has brought the Code to the palm of your hand. The PRSA Ethics app is available for free in Google’s Android Market and Apple’s App Store and can be accessed from iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

#PRin2013: A Look Back at the Predictions

As we wrap up this year’s #PRin2013 series, here is a recap of what our 12 contributors predicted for the public relations industry in 2013.

Kirk Hazlett, APR, Fellow PRSA, kicked off this year’s #PRin2013 series with a prediction that 2013 would be about accountability. The public relations professional must go beyond merely reaching stakeholder audiences. They must ensure that the message is genuine and any promises made to the public are genuine.

Elise Mitchell, APR, Fellow PRSA, offered up six trends she sees on the horizon this year.

Why and How Senior Public Relations Officers Raise Ethical Concerns

Most public relations practitioners who are members of professional associations are likely familiar with industry codes of ethics; however, familiarity with codes does not imply that practitioners know what to do when faced with an ethical dilemma.  In an academic study recently published in the Journal of Mass Media Ethics, my coauthor Dr. Minette Drumwright and I conducted in-depth interviews with 30 senior practitioners from 10 states in the U.S. and Australia, who had an average of 27 years of experience.  We identified multiple techniques that anyone could use to raise red flags.
